Alconomics. Alcohol consumption in US and Russia Essay

Alconomics. Alcohol consumption in US and Russia - Essay Example Correlation analysis is used to establish whether there is a linear relationship between the variables income (independent) and level of consumption, measured in pints of alcohol for the preceding month (dependent variable). We realize that there is significant positive correlation between the amount of money an individual earns and their tendency to increase alcohol intake, at 1% level of significance. Therefore the richer a Russian is (owing to their immediate income), the greater their tendency to take more alcohol. There is weak positive correlation between the income of an individual and the severity of their alcoholism tendencies. However, the correlation between the variables is not significant at 1% level of significance. This means there is a weak positive relationship between the earnings of an individual and their alcohol consumption rate in the USA. Next we test whether age is a strong determinant (or a determinant at all) of the level of alcohol consumption among individuals. This is tested using regression analysis. The dependent variable is level of consumption (number of pints) while the independent variable is the age of the respondent. Only 2.2% of the variation observed in the dependent variable (age of respondent) is explained by the independent variable (amount of alcohol). Therefore age is not a valuable predictor of the amount of alcohol consumed by the Russian population, when the results are generalized to cover the whole population represented by the sample. Next the study takes a predictive dimension, trying to ascertain what we would expect to see in the levels of alcoholism between the two countries. To do this we assume that on average, the respondents are not sure whether they will stop alcoholism at all. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test is used to test any deviations of the overall response from this pre-determined score (assumed median

Education policy in USA Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Education policy in USA - Term Paper Example It has often been argued that education policies adopted by USA have not been as effective as expected during the planning phase owing to the persistence of several problems. One of the critical issues in the educational policy of USA can be identified as the lack of adequate number of teachers as compared to the number of students. Consequently, there is unevenness in the student-teacher ratio that is affecting the education system of the country. Furthermore, it has been analyzed that the rise in tuition fees of the collages is also an important issue to be worth discussing in the education policy of USA. It has also been viewed that the graduation percentage of USA has been decreasing in the recent times, probably because of the rising high education prices. Evidently, the government has been concerned about such issues, and thus, USA today aims to be the best in providing education in the world and lead the world in terms of college graduates by the year 2020 assisting educationa l institutions and states with requisite funding in order to minimize financial burden on schools which in turn is expected to cut education expenses in the country (AASCU, â€Å"Top 10 Higher Education State Policy Issues for 2010† Policy Almanac, â€Å"Education†; Policy Insider, â€Å"U.S. Dept. of Education Continues Funding School Improvement Grants†). The issues mentioned above are quite significant in relation to the development of the education system of the country. For instance, less student-teacher ratio would mean that students could be able to learn more efficiently and increase their chances of success. For instance, less student-teacher ratio would mean that students could be able to learn more efficiently and increase their chances of success. It has also been viewed that the success or the development of the students largely depends on the teachers. Additionally, the issue of rise in tuition fees has also affected the higher education in USA by a significant extent, especially among the low-income group and middle-income group students. Although the government has been allocating requisite funding to the schools, the occurrence of recent financial turmoil as well as the recessionary conditions in the economy can be identified to have widened the issue of rising education costs in USA. Hence, as education acts as a backbone of societal development, USA needs to intervene and solve such issues as failure to do so would de-motivate people from pursuing higher education courses and thus hampering the overall progress of the society on the whole (AASCU, â€Å"Top 10 Higher Education State Policy Issues for 2010†; Hopkins, â€Å"Colleges with the Lowest Student-Faculty Ratios†). Unit #7 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Unit #7 - Assignment Example Most disabled children are easily subjected to ungovernability and truancy charges. According to Miller (2008, P. 113, C.2, Para. 1), there were97 deaf inmates at the Texas State Prison with 61% of them being convicted of violent offenses, 19% illegal drug violations, and 11% were convicted of other petty crimes like indecent exposure. Various schools are obligated to single out students with special needs like deafness and give them specialized treatment (Tulman, & Weck, 2010, P. 878, Para. 2). Failure to efficiently adopt this, deaf students will be more vulnerable to committing various crimes. Additionally, deaf students are likely to commit status offences which are, by classification, a particular category of non-criminal misbehaviors, (Tulman, & Weck, 2010, P. 879, Para. 2). Despite the fact that the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Act (JJDPA) has advocated for the deinstitutionalization of status offences, several deaf offenders have ended up in correctional facilities. Due to their perceived naivety and disabilities, deaf inmates are highly vulnerable to sexual assaults and other discriminations in prisons, Vernon (2010, P.311, C.2, Para. 2). Additionally, some are subjected to forced treatments against their will in the correctional facilities. Subsequently, most prisons even do not know their deaf inmates are making it hard for them to get access to parole services. Moreover, it is uncommon for the jury to incarcerate deaf defendants experiencing linguistic incompetence, Miller (2008, P. 117, C.2, Para. 2). For instance, the case of Mr. J, who was deafened by meningitis, aged 3. Mr. J was treated harshly by a policewoman after he accidentally scratched a Corvette at a dinner. After being assaulted by more policemen, he was jailed without treatment. Additionally, he was tried without an interpreter. About 40% of deaf defenders experience communication

Ralph Vaughan Williams Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Ralph Vaughan Williams - Essay Example At this juncture, in order to understand the reasons behind the great degree of neglect Vaughan Williams faced, it is necessary to start from the beginning of his musical life. Ralph Vaughan Williams was born as the third child of Arthur and Margaret Vaughan Williams, on 12 October 12, 1872, in Down Ampney. Arthur was the vicar of All Saints Church at Down Ampney. Ralph received his early music lessons from his aunt Sophy as music was important in the family. Thus, at the age of six, he produced his first piano piece named ‘The Robin Nest’. According to records, he also loved reading, playing duets, and enjoying Shakespearian works3. As he reached the preparatory school at Rottingdean, he realised that he was good in violin. However, his family wanted him to concentrate on organ instead of violin. After his preparatory school, he joined the Royal College of Music where Sir Hubert Parry gave him in depth knowledge about music. Furthermore, it was at this time that he was filled with a degree of nobility and greatness of English choral tradition. One can see the influence of folk songs on the texture, contours, and melodies of his works like Fen Country and Norfolk Rhapsodies. In addition, there was the impact of his connection with hymn-tunes on his works as he was the musical editor of the English Hymnal for a long time. At that time, he spent considerable amount of time studying the works of Tudor and Elizabethan composers. In fact, over these years, he was influenced by the works of a lot of great people ranging from Sir Hubert Parry, Tudor, and Elizabethan choral music. Thus, in the year 1910, he produced remarkable works like Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and A Sea Symphony. As Alain Frogley points out, the lack of recognition received by Vaughan Williams was not a mere accident; instead, his contribution was distorted and blighted â€Å"not only by the international musical politics of this century,

Occupy Wall Street Movement Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Occupy Wall Street Movement - Research Paper Example The movement is stimulated by the recent successful uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia and Syria. Their goal is to confront the status quo in the government and the wealthy people who control most of the world’s resources. Their dominance creates an iniquitous global economy that disfavors the majority who are unable to compete effectively within the capitalist system. They aim at confronting greed, corruption and dominance by the business elites and politicians and creating accommodative redress to all persons (Vag, 2011). â€Å"Moral and economic implications involved in the movement† The OWS believe that a minority 1% of the world’s population controls the majority of meaningful resources. Their slogan, â€Å"we are the 99%† is based on socio-economic statistics for the year 2011. They argue that the 99% in the society is left to survive on very little that compromises their sustainable living. This movement shuns such dominance. They assert that it is instiga ted by insatiability, egotism and corruption. They petition authorities and decision makers to review their policies and redress these economic disparities between the 99% and the 1% (Vag, 2011). The OWS movement is fundamentally an awakening caveat to the people that concentrate the world’s wealth, power and control in their hands at the loss of the society. The movement appeals to the moral reasoning behind utilitarianism. Majority of the world lives in unemployment, poverty and homelessness while another group enjoys luxury, space, wealth and power (Vag, 2011). Therefore, a majority group has a bleak future with an diminishing ability to determine their destiny. The historical and economic implications to these inequalities have resulted to perceived economic injustices. The OWS aims at prompting the decision makers to review these principals consciously and address livelihood variability’s among populations. â€Å"The implications identified against the utilitaria n, Kantian and virtue ethics to apply which theory best applies to the movement position†. The OWS aimed at confronting the corporate dominance in democracy and lack of legal actions to the perpetrators of the global economic crises. The utilitarian principle asserts that the ultimate socio-political and socio-economic achieves collective economic success. This system is not informed by moral merit and virtue. Nonetheless, it is expected to achieve the expected consequences of addressing socio-economic inequalities (White, 2006). The OWS bargains against these grounds to identify a cohesive ground for addressing social inequalities. The Kantian theory emphasizes on equality among all persons. It is perceived as a viable option to utilitarianism (White, 2006). Utilitarian theory overlooks the moral significance of moral virtues that inform minority issues and human rights. The utilitarian principles do not accord intrinsic values to human beings. The goal is to capitalize on in dividual rather than society benefits. The Kant theory concentrates on the most applicable channel to address issues. The theory that best compliments the OWS is the Kantian movement (Vag, 2011). The OWS is specifically is specifically interested in collective benefits and embodies a distinct shift in ethical dimensions. â€Å"Who is responsible for income inequality and wealth distribution in the US, Explain Rationale?†
